Zonta Says NOW
to Climate Action and Gender Equality

The Zonta International Statement on Climate Change and Gender Equality

The Zonta Club of Fort Collins along with Zontians globally are committed to effecting climate action with special emphasis on gender equality.

Climate change is a global crisis that has an increasingly negative impact on people.  It further divides equality between genders with the most negatively impacted being women and children as the result of worsening climate conditions.  Extreme weather events, poor air quality, food insecurity, increase in vector borne diseases, health inequities, loss of housing, lack of clean drinking water, and forced migration increase the likelihood a woman becomes a victim of violence, human trafficking, mood disorders and poor economic recovery.  During extreme weather conditions the fate of women are precariously more at-risk than men.  This is more pronounced with women who are at a lower economic status and/or living in low and middle income countries.

Climate action requires bolder steps for equality that includes but not limited to promoting women to achieve higher education, hold leadership roles, negotiate policies, run for government office,  and be an equal part of innovation, education and corporate opportunites for effective and sustainable climate action globally.

In our region, Zonta district 12 members are working towards gender equality and improving our environment.  The Action for Environment and Gender Equality district committee is actively preparing educational information and programming to provide our district Zonta clubs the tools to build our local communities with greater knowledge of climate change and gender equality issues specific to our region.  Together we are working with ZontaUSACaucus subcommittee on climate change and Zonta International to collaboratively make a difference in the lives of women and children.
